Reagents are substances or compounds added to systems to produce a chemical reaction, or added to test if a reaction would be made. These substances are found in laboratories all over the world because without them pure results would not be able to be gotten from tests.
There are common reagents you would see when you enter a laboratory, and we have listed five (5) here to give you an idea. It's okay to add more common laboratory reagents you know that are not mentioned here in our comment section, let's get the discussion up and running.
Without further ado, below is a list of five (5) top laboratory reagents used in Nigeria.
- Peroxyacetic acid: Also known as PAA, is an organic compound with the formula CH₃CO₃H. This compound is a colourless liquid, that can be highly corrosive. Peroxyacetic acid is used in numerous applications, it is commonly used as a chemical disinfectant in healthcare, water treatment, and, as a sanitiser in the food industry.
- Ammonia: This is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the formula NH₃. Ammonia is a colourless gas with a distinct characteristic of a pungent smell. Approximately 80% of the ammonia manufactured is used in agriculture as fertilizer. It is commonly used as a refrigerant gas, for the purification of water supplies, and in the manufacture of plastics, explosives, dyes, pesticides, textiles, and other chemicals. [PLG]
- Sodium hydroxide: Also known as caustic soda, is a reagent that is white and solid in nature and is commonly used in the manufacture of paper, soap, detergents, drain cleaners, and quite a number of products found in our supermarkets. In the market, there are two types of caustic sodas, pure and impure. Pure caustic soda is commonly used in making soaps, candles et al, while impure caustic soda is found in drain cleaners because it transforms grease that clogs our pipes into soap, which then dissolves in water.
- Ethanol: This is a popular reagent used in the medical, food, automotive industries, and other popular ones worth mentioning. Ethanol is a vaporous, colourless liquid with a mild odour. This reagent is a renewable biofuel because it is made from biomass.
- Chloroform: Chloroform is one of the four chloromethanes, that swiftly evaporates into a gas, and is also known as trichloromethane. Chloroform is a biological compound with the formula CHCl₃. This reagent is a liquid known to be colourless, dense, emits a strong smell.
All aforementioned reagents are important in their own special way. They are just a handful of reagents commonly found in laboratories in Nigeria, there are a colossal amount of reagents used in Nigeria, we have listed just a tip of the iceberg.
